The Redemptorist Community

Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer

“They hardly even know the name of Jesus,” the young priest exclaimed. He could hardly believe that, a few miles outside of the priest-rich city of Naples, shepherds and the rural poor knew practically nothing about the faith into which they were born. He had come into the countryside for a vacation and was to leave it with a new vision.

The young priest was Saint Alphonsus Liguori. In 1732 he gathered a small band of men around him to preach the Good News to “the poor and most abandoned.” From this original group the Redemptorists developed and today are preaching the Good News in countries on every continent of the globe.

We Redemptorists believe that we are called to a unique way of life. It can, perhaps, be summed up in the distinct flavor of our community life which is interwoven with apostolic mission, as we seek to answer “the urgent pastoral needs of the Church” in the various situations in which we find ourselves. We live together, pray together, work together, and try to be a team and a family. Our rule of life sums it up. We are humbled by the grace of finding ourselves being evangelized by those to whom we are called to evangelize!

We are called to prolong in the world the presence of Christ and His mission of Redemption. We choose the Person of Christ as the center of our lives, and we strive to become attached to Him more intimately in personal union as each day goes by. Thus at the heart of our community to mold us and sustain us is Jesus Christ the Redeemer, and His Spirit of Charity.
